According to Indonesia's NPAP data, Indonesia produces around 6.8 million tons of plastic waste per year, and 61% is not managed. It has been estimated that 620,000 tons of plastic waste entered Indonesian waters in the year 2017, and without intervention, the number will increase by 30% in 2025. With hopes of tackling this problem, the Informal Plastic Collection Innovation Challenge was launched. This was created by The National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) with UpLink and the Ocean Plastic Prevention Accelerator (OPPA). As Registrations have closed, finalists will be selected to participate in the three-month development program, starting from June to September 2021. At the end of the innovation competition, solutions will be found for ways to improve the integration of informal sector workers in the field of waste management.
